CASE STUDIES - CLIENT STORIES
Participant A - Case Study
Participant A joined the Elevate service in 2022. Participant A began by looking for support in their recovery, hoping to gain news skills and find out what they were looking for in life. Through this, Participant A eventually discovered a passion for psychology.
Through Elevate, Participant A is now studying a psychology course at the City of Glasgow College. During their time at City of Glasgow, Participant A’s worker has been supporting them with academic writing and developing their reading skills. With this continued support, Participant A successfully completed their first essay on their course with no issues.
Participant A is still engaged with Elevate. They need further support to build up their confidence more. Especially when it comes to reading and understanding academic text.
Participant B Journey – In the participants own words
“When I arrived at GCA I was a bit broken and lacked sense of direction in life. I started engaging with my Elevate worker, who suggested that I took part in counselling at the same time as having my weekly meeting with him. Soon we discussed the opportunity to join a support group that was being held at the GCA office.
Through the combination of services I attended, I soon came to a point where I felt confident to start applying for jobs. Since I started feel so much better, I no longer wanted a sick line from the doctor, I wanted a job. My Elevate worker identified a few jobs and suggested them to me. I was interested in a part time job to start getting used to a job again. We applied and I was hopeful. Next session when I hadn’t heard back from the job, my worker suggested I went up to the company to visit. I was invited in and because of my proactiveness, I was offered a trial shift. The week after my shift, I was hired.
Through attending my Elevate appointments I have not only received support in getting back into work, but have also learned about training opportunities that may lead to progressing in my career”
Participant C
At Elevate Employability, our first step was to focus on participant C’s immediate well-being. We worked together to identify some of the root causes of his struggles and connected him with Men Matter Scotland, an organisation that supports men facing mental health challenges. The group provided him with a community of peers, and he began to realise that he wasn’t alone in his struggles. Slowly, he began to open up, sharing his feelings and building connections that made a significant difference in his outlook.
Parallel to this, we took small, manageable steps toward improving his employability. Participant C expressed an interest in giving back to the community but didn’t feel ready for paid employment just yet. We explored voluntary roles as a way to rebuild his confidence, providing him with a sense of purpose and routine.
In a matter of a few weeks, participant C had secured not one but two voluntary positions at Possibilities and Your Wee Red Bus. These roles gave him the structure he needed, and with each passing day, his self-esteem blossomed. He no longer turned to alcohol to cope; instead, he found fulfilment in the work he was doing and the positive impact he was making. He even began advocating for others in similar situations, offering words of encouragement and support to those facing similar battles.
Today, participant C is in a much happier place. His journey is a testament to the fact that, with the right support and determination, it’s possible to overcome even the darkest of times. He continues to thrive in his voluntary roles, and his involvement with Men Matter Scotland remains a cornerstone of his well-being. His future, which once seemed uncertain, is now full of potential and hope.
I couldn’t be prouder of participant C’s progress, and I’m reminded every day that no matter how tough the road may seem, positive change is always possible.”
Partner TestimonialS
Louise Stewart – Director of Service Delivery, With You, Scotland
“We have been very pleased to work alongside the Elevate programme for the past 6 years and see daily the positive impact that the programme has made to individuals and organisations. We employ a number of people who came to us initially through Elevate and are now in various positions across the organisation including leadership positions. Elevate have created and enhanced Lived Experience employability pathways and should be held as an example of best practice and replicated across the country”
Malcom Mackay – Service Leader, Crossreach, Whiteinch Move On
“CrossReach very much appreciate the work of Elevate PSP over a number of years and we benefit greatly from the Networking opportunities which Elevate provide in bringing voluntary organisations and community based services together to share good working practices and events/opportunities which are available across all areas of Glasgow. This hugely benefits the people we support, all of whom are in Recovery from substance use and many of whom are Homeless and have poor mental health. Elevate are at the centre of making Recovery support available in the city and CrossReach appreciate that as we cannot provide this range of support on our own.
We also have 2 Elevate Placements, who are completing a SVQ3 in Health & Social Care, volunteering in two of our Services and their contribution to the support we offer to people is significant. One of the placements has been offered and accepted a Relief Support Worker job within my Service.
CrossReach also has an Employability Support Worker based in my CrossReach Service once a fortnight providing one to one support and offering opportunity to the people we support and the strong partnership relationship we share with Elevate has a huge impact on the wellbeing of the people we support, giving them purpose, structure and promoting self esteem, all of which are required to maintain recovery from substance use.”
